Fiji remains a top destination for Australians year after year. We’ve talked about what makes it such a great family destination, but there’s more to the story. After 26 years in the travel industry, Ben Johnson, Area Director of Sales and Marketing for Outrigger’s Fiji Islands, can detail why Fiji is the ultimate destination for every life stage.
What excites you about Fiji the most as a destination?
Fiji is a wonderfully authentic country, steeped in tradition and rich with culture. It is safe, close, incredibly family-friendly but also offers romance, and is so much more than white beaches, crystal blue water and palm trees – be adventurous.
The Fijians have a genuine warmth, sincerity and hospitality that the world is in need of, and a simple philosophy of kindness - ‘what’s mine is yours’.
How does Outrigger make it feel new and special each time?
Whenever anyone travels to Fiji for the first or the fifth time, our immediate aim is to welcome them home as part of the Outrigger Fiji Vuvale, or family. The Resort does have an extensive activities schedule within the Resort, which is frequently refreshed, and there are many activities located near us for guests to experience, such as Kula Adventure Park, Jet Boating and the new and amazing Eco Trax.
What has Outrigger done to make it such a great family resort?
Our award-winning complimentary Kids Clubs encompassing two different age groups so that the activities are age-relevant and as well as being fun they focus on the Marine environment and Fijian Culture.
Our Mei Mei or Nanny Service is also wonderful, so parents can happily leave the little ones ages 6 months upwards in the care of our experienced loving nannies and head off to the Spa for some r&r.
What about for couples?
Breakfast, lunch or dinner – you can dine in our Adult only zones within the Resort, or spend the day in Vahavu our Adults only Pool area with swim-up Bar. Then our BeBe Spa is award winning and is the perfect adult only zone for Couples massage or a whole range of Spa treatments.
What about for solo travellers?
Fijians are renowned globally for their genuine warmth and hospitality, solo travellers would never feel alone or isolated, and would soon be enveloped in the Fijian Vuvale.
How can travellers be respectful while they’re experiencing the Fijian culture?
Take 10 minutes and do a little research online; understand the protocol of being invited into a Village – no hat, no sunglasses, appropriate coverage for both men and women with the traditional sulu, don’t touch a Fijians face or hair and learn some basic Fijian words.
Take gifts for the Fijian children you may meet, rugby ball or Footy Ball (deflated of course), sports equipment, marbles, and if you do intend on doing a village tour or visit, pack a backpack as a gift to the Chief of the Village, and include items for the children, but also toiletries and a sneaky pack of Tim Tams.
