If you subscribe to the idea that going on a cruise holiday was for retirees only, it’s high time to reconsider. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, 46% of all cruise passengers are now under the age of 50. Luckily, cruise lines have been quick on the uptake, making extraordinary additions and changes to their amenities and activities onboard. Here are seven of the most unbelievably cool experiences you can find on a cruise ship today.
1. Robot bartenders - Royal Caribbean
Imagine the unparalleled futuristic tech of Japan paired with the taste of tasty, personalised cocktails enjoyed during your comfortable cruise ship: now you’re picturing the very real Bionic Bar onboard five Royal Caribbean cruises. Guests order their drinks with a tablet and watch - in awe - a robot bartender mix, shake, and serve.
2. Race track - Norwegian Cruise Line
Put the pedal to the metal as you zoom around Norwegian Cruise Line’s Bliss ship's one-of-a-kind race track, the largest of its kind at sea. This activity is available to both children and adults, which if you ask us sounds like a friendly ‘parents vs. children competition’ waiting to happen!
3. Waterslide - Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival Cruise Line proudly boasts the steepest waterslide at sea. Guests, meet Green Thunder. This mighty ride available on all ships keeps the fun running at 65 kilometres per hour. While kids are welcome to slide, guests of all ages will feel like kids again as they take the ride of their life onboard.
4. Discovery™ at Sea - Princess Cruises
Onboard the Enchanted Princess, guests of all ages are invited to pique their curiosity with the exclusive Discovery™ at Sea program, which includes stargazing, Encounters with Discovery at SEA speakers, and more. This program is practically an added excursion to a cruise itinerary.
5. Movies under the stars - Seabourn Cruise Line
Visiting the cinemas under the stars has been an increasingly popular trend on land in major cities. But on Seabourn Cruise Line’s Encore and Ovation, the cinema is surrounded by stars right there on the pool deck. With the fresh air flowing and the world passing by, guests get lost in the magic of a movie without abandoning the comforts they expect cruising with Seabourn.
6. Silent disco - U by Uniworld
U by Uniworld, the luxury river cruise’s millennial-focused line, hosts one of the hottest night club trends: the silent disco. The resident DJ spins the music that plays in guests’ headphones, inviting everyone to dance in sync without stopping anyone from socialising aloud.
7. Australian literature collection - Silversea Cruises
Luxury cruise line Silversea’s has built a bespoke library on the Silver Muse within the Arts Cafe that will feature a special collection of Australian literature. The collection will feature new and out-of-print titles, a true coup for the literati. This showcase was the result of a partnership between Silversea and London-based bookshop Heywood Hill.
