Don’t get us wrong – Sydney is amazing. But sometimes you just want to escape the big smoke and be at one with nature. With beaches, mountains, and valleys, there are plenty of options for fun weekend trips from Sydney. Here are five fabulous locations for a New South Wales getaway, all within a few hours from the city.

1. Kangaroo Valley

Nature lovers are drawn to the beautiful landscapes, while thrill-seekers will find plenty of challenges on the hiking trails, rock-faces and rivers of the nearby national parks.  2. Port Stephens

For the perfect combination of a weekend getaway and beach lifestyle, there are few travel destinations that hit the spot better than Port Stephens. With 26 golden beaches, the region is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and even dolphin spotting. The most popular and famous places are Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay – which some refer to as heaven on earth.

3. Hunter Valley

Whether you’re a vino buff or just partial to a glass, travel to one of Australia’s most-loved wine regions – the Hunter Valley. It is also renowned for its fine dining, cooking schools, galleries, health spa retreats and golf courses. Instead of traditional visits, consider a bike tour of the vineyards or booking a food tour to make your weekend even more special. And if you want a little romance book a hot air balloon ride over the scenic area.

4. Bowral

Nestled at the base of Mt Gibraltar, Bowral is everything a country town should be – small, good looking and crammed with atmosphere. Bong Bong Street is the town's main drag with a number of cafes, pubs, restaurants, art galleries, antique dealers and fashion boutiques. The Bowral Lookout provides nature, walking and scenic views of the area. Oh, and cricket fans, this is home of the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame.

5. Jervis Bay

With powder-white sand and clear turquoise waters, the beaches of Jervis Bay on the south coast are amongst the safest and most beautiful in the world. The main town of Jervis Bay is Huskisson. It's the perfect launching point to join dolphin watching cruises, fishing trips and sailing excursions. You can also go scuba diving, kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding in the pure waters of Jervis Bay Marine Park.
