According to Skyscanner’s Travel Trends Report, 40% of Australians travelled with their families in 2018. While that’s an impressive number, we’d like to see even more! However, nearly 30% of the study’s respondents noted that they find family travel planning “somewhat” or “very” difficult. That’s why we’re here to assuage any and every fear of travel planning and booking!
Where do we start?
Any hesitation of travelling with little ones is outweighed by immense joys of taking a family holiday. The first step in planning is deciding on where to go.
Based on a combination of the key apprehensions that parents have – from flight cost and duration to number of family-friendly attractions to safety in the destination and beyond – Skyscanner put together this list of top 10 destinations that Aussie families love:
- Gold Coast, Australia
- Sydney, Australia
- Melbourne Australia
- Nadi, Fiji
- Auckland, New Zealand
- Cairns, Australia
- Bali, Indonesia
- Singapore, Singapore
- Tokyo, Japan
- Phuket, Thailand
Four of the top 10 destinations are domestic, a natural option for first-time travellers. Flight times will be significantly shorter and typically cheaper, which makes them appealing. But they’re also full of family-friendly activities - including theme parks and natural wonders to explore - and have no language barrier, making them an easy trip for any nervous travellers.
But a first family trip can take everyone overseas with ease! The island paradise of Fiji is only a short flight from the east coast of Australia and offers some of the best nanny services available anywhere (everything you’ve heard about warm Fijian hospitality is true!).
Of course, with more little travellers, it’s natural for families to consider the cost of an overseas holiday. However, destinations such as Phuket and Bali rank highly in Skyscanner’s Family Travel Survey. In destinations like these, the daily spend on everyday items and experiences cost less than they do in some domestic destinations.
Up, up and away
Before you leave for your holiday, you’ll want to be strategic while packing. Skyscanner advises that nominating one packer will help the family avoid duplicate items and be the most efficient with space. For your carry-on bag, make sure you keep a stash of wet wipes and Pull Ups if your kids are of that age - being prepared is the best defence for any unexpected accidents. It’s also important to consider what the first time on a plane will be like for the little ones. Follow these tips for avoiding children’s ear pain on planes and don’t forget how magical air travel is! Embrace the spirit of adventure.
As it turns out, another recent Skyscanner study revealed that 27% of Australians choose to visit the same destination every year rather than explore a new destination and another article published by ABC indicated that 40% of Australians have never travelled overseas.
Let’s get those numbers lower! Skyscanner launched their Travel Firsts Hub, a virtual hand-hold for travellers at the beginning of their travel journey with more helpful tips for first time family trips and even first time overseas travellers. And at 7travel, we’re always happy to chat to you on the phone to work through any travel dilemmas!
