What is it?
For the last 10 years, Vivid Sydney has illuminated Australia with innovative light art, concerts, talks, and more.
This year, Vivid Sydney will run for 23 nights from Friday 25 May – Saturday 16 June from 6-11pm.
What can we expect to see?
If nothing else, the Lighting of the Sails on the Sydney Opera House is a staple to witness. Each night during Vivid, the icon of Sydney becomes a technicolour delight.
Nearby, the Royal Botanic Garden hosts a number of light installations along its pathways. On the other side of Circular Quay, The Rocks will also feature light and sculpture installations, including virtual BALLpit and 1,000 Cranes.
Taronga Zoo is a favourite during Vivid, as it puts on a Lights for the Wild showcase. This year, the Zoo is adding a flotilla of animal light sculptures to share their message about and passion for conservation.
What can we expect to hear?
The Vivid Music program grows year over year. In 2018, a mix of international performers - including Solange, St Vincent, Ice Cube - and local talent - such as Vera Blue and Goldheist - take to the stages of the Sydney Opera House, Carriageworks, and Enmore Theatre.
The Vivid Ideas program has expanded tremendously into a hub of conferences, lectures, panels, and interactive workshops taking place in Sydney and the Surrounds. From science to design to the #MeToo movement, no topic is off limits.
What can we expect to eat?
Barangaroo, Sydney’s new harbourside food and fashion precinct, is participating for the second time in Vivid Sydney. From 6-9pm each night of the festival, Barangaroo’s restaurants, cafes, and bars are serving up Vivid-inspired dishes, cocktails, and more. This is a family event - as is the entire festival - with interactive fun for kids, including face painting, live music, and more. At The Canteen, kids meals are $10 and come with a toy.
